What does your car need to tow a caravan?

To safely tow your caravan, your vehicle must be properly equipped with;

  • Towbars and couplings of a suitable type and capacity (we can help with this!)
  • Electrical sockets for lighting
  • Brake connections if the trailer is fitted with power or electric brakes

What Electrics are needed to tow a caravan?

Single 7 pin electrics also known as 12N towing electrics are needed to power the lighting on a trailer, caravan, cycle carrier or anything you’re towing. (The single 7 pin electrics power left and right indicator and taillights, fog lights and brake lights).

Do I need a 12 pin plug to tow a caravan?

12-pin connectors are typically required when towing caravans, which may require refrigerators and other accessories to run while on the go.

Do you need electric brake controller to tow a caravan?

Electronic brakes are most commonly used on caravans and trailers over 750kg and are legally required on all caravans and trailers where the GTM is more than 2000kg. Remember that if you are considering electronic brakes, you will need to install a control unit in the tow vehicle.
