Why do European Vehicles need specialist fitment?

Most European vehicles built in the last decade use a CAN bus electrical system (a smart network that monitors and controls all the vehicle’s electronics). Standard trailer wiring can interfere with this system, triggering warning lights or causing electrical faults if it’s not done correctly.

At Tom’s, we use specialist wiring solutions designed for European vehicles, so your towbar is fitted and wired correctly without affecting your car’s systems.

Class 2 or 4 towbar for European vehicles?

Most European cars, sedans, hatchbacks and small to medium SUVs suit a Class 2 towbar. This covers everyday towing like small trailers, bike racks and light campers.

Larger European SUVs, like a Volkswagen Touareg, Volvo XC90, BMW X5 or Mercedes GLE for example, may be rated for heavier towing and suit a Class 4 towbar up to 3,500kg braked.

Can you fit a towbar to my BMW / Mercedes / Audi?

Yes. These are some of the most common European vehicles we fit towbars to. We carry towbars suited to a wide range of BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi models across both Class 2 and Class 4 ratings.

My European vehicle has rear parking sensors, will a towbar affect them?

Rear parking sensors are common on European vehicles and can be managed as part of the installation. There are wiring solutions that automatically disable the rear sensors when a trailer is connected, avoiding false alerts. We can include this as part of your fitting.

How long does it usually take to install a towbar?

Most installations are completed in a few hours. European vehicles can sometimes take a little longer due to the wiring complexity, but we’ll give you an accurate timeframe when you book.

Do you fit towbars to European electric and hybrid vehicles?

Yes. Many European EVs and hybrids are vehicles we fit towbars to, including Volvo XC40 Recharge, Volkswagen ID.4, Peugeot e-2008 and others.
