Don’t know what I would’ve done without the help from the team at Tom’s Towbars- had to get a new Car and in order to tow our Caravan we needed a break controller fitted which was impossible to do 1 week before Christmas. They offered a simple solution via a portable Bluetooth break controller rather than trying to find a place that could install us the traditional break controller which is fitted directly to the Car. Not only did this suggestion help us save a lot of money but time and stress as well as we only had a half day left in Perth to figure out what to do. So when arriving at the shop, they checked out everything electrical on our cars back end where the 12 pin plug was, to make sure we would choose the correct product. Once we arrived at our home some 1000 kilometres away it was an easy do it yourself install on the caravan A frame with a simple adapter to make everything work wirelessly- couldn’t be happier and so we are very thankful for Tom and his team to think outside the box and come up with the best no fuss  solution for our dilemma. A few things worth knowing about towing with an electric car

Getting an electric car towbar fitted in Perth is straightforward, but there are a few things worth knowing before you book.

Tow ratings vary between models. Some electric cars have a manufacturer-approved tow rating of 1,500–2,000kg braked, while others are only rated for lighter loads or bike carriers. Your vehicle handbook has the exact figure – or we can look it up when you enquire.

Towing will reduce your range. The most common question we get from EV owners: and it’s worth being upfront about. Towing with an electric car will reduce your driving range, sometimes significantly depending on the load, speed and terrain. It doesn’t affect the towbar fitting itself, but it’s worth factoring into your towing plans.

Not every electric car is approved for towing. A small number of EVs aren’t manufacturer-approved for towing at all, which means a towbar can’t be legitimately fitted. We’ll confirm your car’s tow approval status when you get in touch.

Which towbar class does my electric car need?

It depends on your car’s tow rating and what you’re planning to tow.

Most fully electric cars suit a Class 2 towbar – rated to 1,200kg braked, suitable for bike racks, small trailers and lighter camper setups. Larger electric SUVs and PHEVs with higher tow ratings may suit a Class 4 bar instead.

Can electric cars tow in Australia?

Yes, many electric cars sold in Australia have a manufacturer-approved tow rating and can tow with a properly fitted towbar. The main things to check are your car’s specific tow rating and whether towing is covered under your model’s approval. We can help you confirm this when you enquire.

Will fitting a towbar to my electric car affect the battery warranty?

Towing within your car’s manufacturer-approved limits shouldn’t affect your battery warranty. The key is not to exceed the rated tow capacity. If you have specific concerns, it’s worth checking your warranty documentation directly.

Do electric and hybrid cars need special wiring for a towbar?

Yes – many EVs and hybrids need specific wiring solutions to work correctly with their electrical systems. Standard trailer wiring can cause issues on some models. We always check the manufacturers guides to make sure everything works properly without triggering warning lights or faults.

Can I fit a towbar to my hybrid car for towing a caravan?

How long does it usually take to install a towbar on an electric car?

Do you fit towbars to Tesla models?

No. Tom’s Towbars does not currently install towbars on Tesla vehicles.
